The LA Mambo Combo

  • The L.A. Mambo Combo Latin Jazz Ensemble is an eight piece band that was
started and is still based in the Los Angeles area. The music is highly
influenced by such notable greats as Poncho Sanchez, Francisco Aguabella, Tito
Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and many others.

The Mambo Combo’s repertoire is a variety of Jazz standards, Latin-Jazz standards plus
some original works as well, all arranged in the flavorful Afro-Cuban,
Tropi-Jazz, Salsa style. The group’s instrumental line up consists of piano, bass,
trombone, trumpet, saxophone/flute, congas, bongos and timbales.

The musicians all live in the southland now, but four of the members are transplanted to the
L.A. region. One from Japan, one from the island of St. Thomas in the U.S.
Virgin Islands, another from the Netherlands and one from New York. Of  the
others, three are East L.A. natives and one from the distant land of  Pico Rivera, CA.

The band has been working together since June of 1999. Among some of the
highlights of the group’s short history are being the opening act in July
2000 at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank, California for the Grammy award winning
    Poncho Sanchez and his band.
Also the 2003 Memorial Day weekend Playboy Jazz in Central Park series in Old Town Pasadena, California and the 2003 16th Annual Long Beach Jazz Festival. .

Other memorable outings include the late O.C. Smith’s Annual City of Angels Jazz Festivals in August of 2001 & 2002 in Los Angeles where we experienced a natural high at the 2002 performance when the great flautist Hubert Laws came up and joined the band in our
interpretation of his great tune “Cinderella”.

The band has recorded and released their long awaited first full length
CD titled “El Robo”. It is available for purchase at their performances and is
now being offered through this website.(BUY NOW)
